Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Verily the believer thinks positively of his Lord, therefore he does righteous deeds, and the evildoer thinks negatively of his Lord, therefore he does evil deeds. Narrated by Ahmad in az-Zuhd (p. 402). Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Allahumma-ja’lni khayran mima yadhunoon wa-ghfir li ma la ya’lamoon wa la tu’akhidhni bi ma yaquloon. O Allah, make me better than what they think of me, and forgive me for what they do not know about me, and do not take me to account for what they say about me. Be vulnerable to Allāh and make du‘ā’. Al-Khaṭṭābi explains excellently the functions of du‘ā’: “The meaning of du‘ā’ is the servant’s asking his Lord for His help, and asking His continuous support. Its essence is that a person shows his reliance and need to Allāh, and frees himself from any power or ability to MLgXo3.
