First, Paul is not teaching that we need to do works to get to heaven. Paul is a 100% justification by faith kind of guy. There's a crucial clue in Colossians 3:23-24. Start with verse 23: "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men." There it is — we are called to work heartily for the Lord. So, if that doesn't mean we should work heartily to meet God's needs, what does it mean? I found the answer in the next verse.
